This paper is an academic essay about popular music in films. I wrote it in the spring of 1997 as a part of my film studies at the University of Copenhagen. I have examined the subject matter from a theoretical and aesthetic viewpoint, including comments upon the dramatical functions of and possibilities with popular music in narrative films. I also line up a brief summary of the historical development in the filmic use of popular music. Furthermore I write more specifically about the use of popular music in 4 films : Mean Streets (Scorsese, 1973) , Singles (Crowe, 1992), Natural Born Killers (Stone, 1994) and Willliam Shakespeare´s Romeo and Juliet (Luhrmann, 1996).

The paper is in Danish. But if you are interested in (or maybe even have worked with) similar subject matters, I´m very interested in hearing from you. So please mail me at: skj@uradio.ku.dk
